Save The Arno & Oxton Fields

We object to plans to cease maintenance of The Arno and Oxton Fields.

Council budget cuts could end maintenance of our much-loved Arno and the neighbouring Oxton Fields

With so many services threatened with cuts this year, looking after open spaces may not be the most obvious priority.

But places like Oxton Fields and The Arno have proved their importance for residents' wellbeing - something we came to appreciate properly during the lockdown.

The Oxton Focus Team has expressed grave concern about the risk of abandoning these open spaces and received this reply from Council officers: "The Arno and Oxton Fields ... are to be included in the proposal to 'Significantly increase cessation of maintenance of amenity green space, including up to 10-15 Local Parks / Recreation Grounds, and highway verges."

We have no objection to increased wild flower planting or new trees, and it might be reasonable to increase re-wilding and help wild life by cutting a greater area of Oxton Fields just once a year, but these areas are too precious simply to be abandoned.

The volunteers in Friends of the Arno & Oxton Fields work so hard to enhance the Green Flag-winning rose garden and beautiful open spaces, but they simply could not undertake the grass-cutting over such an extensive area.

We are petitioning Wirral Council to ask them to drop the idea of not maintaining Oxton's local fields.

Thank you for your interest but we are no longer running this campaign.
