Time to get Tough on Litter!

Overflowing binDespite the heroic efforts of hundreds of local litter-picking volunteers across Birmingham, litter remains a huge problem in many parts of the City. The Council needs to do more to help, both by using its powers to issue fixed penalty notices to those who drop litter in our streets, and also by emptying public litter bins more frequently.

Fixed penalty notices for littering are almost exclusively used in the City Centre. In the three years since May 2018, 14,404 were issued. 14,245, (or 99%) were issued in Ladywood Ward, which covers the City Centre. Only 159 were issued in the other 68 wards in the City. Acocks Green saw just 2 issued, Moseley 1 and many wards, such as Perry Barr, Garratts Green and Sheldon had none issued at all. With hardly any risk of being fined for littering, outside the City Centre, it's not surprising that the problem is so big.

Meanwhile, public litter bins are all too frequently full and overflowing, leaving people who want to use them, unable to do so.

If you agree that more needs to be done to tackle the rising tide of litter in our streets, please sign our petition as set out below:

We the undersigned, call on Birmingham City Council to do more to tackle the problem of litter on our streets, in particular, by:

  1. Issuing Fixed Penalty Notices for littering throughout Birmingham, rather than just concentrating on the City Centre and
  2. Emptying public litter bins more frequently.
