The proposed route (corridor E) of East West Rail uses the existing railway route south of Bedford. However Conservative councillors are pushing for the route to be scrapped and instead go on new tracks south of Bedford. Network Rail plans show a route through Wixams would need to demolish 150 homes.
Please respond to the EWR consultation to support their existing plans to protect Wixams: www.eastwestrail.co.uk/consultation
The current proposals from EWR all use an upgraded Marston Vale Line through Stewartby to get to Bedford. This means that the plans for a Wixams Station on the Thameslink line can carry on being developed without being disrupted or lost altogether by clashing with EWR plans.
However, some Conservative councillors have opposed the previous cross party consensus and now want to see the route changed. Senior Conservative, Cllr Moon has said "We remain opposed to the route chosen".
Network Rail had already drawn up plans in 2019 of what a route through Wixams would look like. They show the need to demolish 150 homes. Residents of Wixams will know there is no gap to fit in a railway travelling east-west through Wixams. You can see the map in more detail here (Source: Network Rail- Phase 2f Appendix D12 Technical Memo 6/3/2019)
East West Railway Company themselves have said "A route South of Bedford would require a combined MML [Midland Mainline/Thameslink] interchange at Wixams on the route options passing to the south of Bedford, which would also require the demolition of residential and/or commercial property" (Consultation Technical Report para 8.1.6 page 233, 2021)
Please sign our petition to stop the risk of demolition of homes in Wixams from a new southern route:
I/we support the existing East West Railway Company Plans to upgrade the existing Marston Vale Line through the area south of Bedford and NOT to reconsider plans for a new line through Wixams.
This is so that the long awaited plans for a Wixams Thameslink Station on the existing line can go ahead and there is no risk of needing to demolish any homes in Wixams.
Whether you've already signed up to the campaign or aren't ready just yet, you can still help encourage other people to sign up.
