The government has made it clear in its guidance to local councils during the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that they 'must provide places for residents to deposit their household waste at all reasonable times'. It also states that 'where possible key [Household Waste Recycling Centres] should be maintained...to reduce the risk of fly tipping and to provide essential access for those not able to store waste indefinitely'.
Despite this advice, Hampshire County Council has temporarily closed all of the tips in our County - including our local site at Wade Road - and Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council has suspended garden waste collection. Not surprisingly, we're already receiving reports of increased fly-tipping and unlicenced waste collections in our Borough and are concerned that this will only get worse once we move to fortnightly bin collections.
As a result, we, the undersigned, call on Hampshire County Council to reopen the tip on Wade Road. We should do so while making sure that we continue to protect the health of all on-site staff and the tip users - it's vital that we stay at home as much as possible to protect the NHS and help save lives. This is in line with government guidance that asks councils to 'make it clear that residents should not leave home except for essentials and ensure social distancing is maintained on sites'.
