Save Free School Meals

Free School MealsWe call on the Government to continue to allow all children whose families receive Universal Credit to continue to receive Free School Meals.

Chancellor Philip Hammond changed the rules in the Spring Statement to disallow children whose parents earnt more than £7,400 (net) from receiving Free School Meals after Years 1 and 2. The Children's Society consider that Free School Meals have important health and educational benefits for children; can improve their diet and increase their concentration during afternoon lessons and can potentially decrease health inequalities. At the moment this policy lifts 140,000 children out of poverty and by continuing to allow all children whose families receive Universal Credit a further 100,000 children would be lifted out of poverty.
